It was with Camden Smith, a drummer and friend of mine from high school. His family had a cool setup where they put a recording studio on the top floor of their barn. They transformed that space into a beautiful spot for making music, filling it with equipment and instruments. As a result of this mad-science-lab, we were able to use some different instruments in Illustration and layer them on top of each other. Listening to this track now, I feel a lot of gratitude to Camden and the other people who collaborated with me during this time in my life. I had a very non-judgmental, open-minded group of people around me, who wanted me to try different sounds and make music that felt authentic. And--at least from my perspective--there was no pretentiousness to any of that. Although we were proud of our music, it wasn't that we believed we were creating earth-shattering art. It was more that we were expressing ourselves and enjoying the relationships we'd forged together. This track could be paired in some ways with the two improvisational albums I did with Ken Hallowell, Our Lady, Windsor and The Waterless Sessions, which represented similar collaborative growth and creative freedom.
