For information about his work, visit www.andysskordis.com. Tibbetts: How long have you composed, and what made you decide to become a composer? Skordis: I have been composing ever since I was a teenager. During that time it was mostly songs for the band I belonged to, and in the process of time I got more involved with film music, jazz arrangements and finally composing for acoustical instruments, which is the context that excites me the most! Tibbetts: What inspires you? Skordis: Inspiration derives mainly from facts of my life. Either personal experiences, state of mind, people I meet and places I visit. Tibbetts: Of all you have done, what do you consider your best work, and why? Skordis: I cannot really approach the pieces I composed so far as having one as my favorite. Each piece reflects a certain time and thought and that's its beauty, since every moment in life is neither better or worse but just different. I feel closer, though, to the music I have been composing the last years, mainly because of the context (acoustical instruments) but also because they are closer to me as far as time. Tibbetts: What is your 'typical day' like? Skordis: Typical day...I don't know if I have a typical day to be honest. My life is split in two in a way since I am not leaving in my home country. In Amsterdam, where I live at the moment, I usually spend my time composing, playing music with friends, cooking and listening to music either home or outside. In Cyprus, my home country, I spend my time travelling around, camping, fishing and hiking. Tibbetts: Do you have any words of wisdom to offer to aspiring composers and musicians? Skordis: Music is something magic, and it is this magic that makes us excited, inspired, and so on. I only feel disappointed when I see people regarding music as a rational object so the only words I can say is just to enjoy music and to have fun exploring sound!
