For information about his work, visit alastairking.me.uk. Tibbetts: How long have you composed, and what made you decide to become a composer? King: I remember crashing away on an old upright at home making up little pieces when I was around seven. It was a while before I wrote anything down but I do remember being excited by the possibility of choosing the notes I wanted. Tibbetts: What inspires you? King: As most of my work is in film or TV then I'd have to say a deadline! Tibbetts: Of all you have done, what do you consider your best work, and why? King: There's quite a lot of things I'm proud of but for different reasons. Sometimes the brief is so tough that to pull anything off is a minor miracle, other times I just feel that I captured the essence of what I set out to do. There are some songs for voice and piano that I feel even fifteen years on I couldn't have done any better now. Tibbetts: What is your 'typical day' like? King: School runs, e-mails, telephone calls, sorting out troublesome computers, emptying the dishwasher and then, in-between, some composition or orchestration! Tibbetts: Do you have any words of wisdom to offer to aspiring composers and musicians? King: Practise, practise, practise. Network, network, network.
