Interview with Edward Manukyan

Tibbetts: How long have you composed, and what made you decide to become a composer?
Manukyan: I have been writing songs since I was 18 or so, but I didn't start composing art music until 2004. It was the influence of Aram Khachaturian's music that sealed my fate as a composer.
Tibbetts: What inspires you?
Manukyan: Love and kindness... Science and reason; the ability of humans to extend their reach and learn new things about nature and the universe.
Tibbetts: Of all you have done, what do you consider your best work, and why?
Manukyan: The pieces that I am most attached to are usually my most recent compositions. So they change as new works are composed, making it difficult to have a favorite.
Tibbetts: What is your 'typical day' like?
Manukyan: I have a wooden table and a stump for a chair in my backyard... Given the beautiful climate of Southern California, it's no surprise that I don't find much else I'd rather do than to sit outside and compose. That works fine for most of the day. I read in the evenings and listen to some radio. Once or twice a week, I spend my day at Balboa Park (or Chatsworth Park) in the San Fernando Valley.
Tibbetts: Do you have any words of wisdom to offer to aspiring composers and musicians?
Manukyan: Perhaps an encouragement to be prepared to repudiate the opinions of everyone, including those you admire the most, if their words are in conflict with facts. Human beings are poorly evolved mammals, and the only way to navigate through life is through evidence-based reasoning, and not relying on authority and good faith.
