Kentaro Sato is a composer and conductor. For information about his work, visit www.wisemanproject.com.

Tibbetts: How long have you composed, and what made you decide to become a composer?

Sato: About 15 years? Since I was a high school student... I was a film major wishing to be a film director and writer when I first moved to Los Angeles from Japan at age 19. But gradually it became apparent that I was more successful in music. So, I decided to change major when I was 21.

Tibbetts: What inspires you?

Sato: My background in film and theater arts taught me to be interested in and inspired by anything.

Tibbetts: Of all you have done, what do you consider your best work, and why?

Sato: Missa pro Pace for a cappella mixed choir. This is my first answer to "how one could achieve a multi-movement major a cappella work with richness of harmony and beauty of melody in complex polyphony in various tempos."

Tibbetts: What is your 'typical day' like?

Sato: Because I now work with clients around the world, there is no typical day to be honest.

Tibbetts: Do you have any words of wisdom to offer to aspiring composers and musicians?

Sato: I was fortunate to win some composition competitions, and they were excellent marketing and performance opportunities. There are competitions for the young around the world, and they might be worth investing your time.
