For information about his work, visit www.amoselkana.com. Tibbetts: How long have you composed, and what made you decide to become a composer? Elkana: I have been composing for more than 20 years now. I came to it unintentionally: As part of my application for the Jazz department at NEC (as a guitarist) I submitted a tape recording of my playing but since I didn't want to bore them with the same old jazz standards I decided to play my own inventions. Their reply was that I am accepted to the composition department instead of the jazz department... Tibbetts: What inspires you? Elkana: Listening to good music or being blown away by a performance or any other art form and nature too but also good books and some people... Tibbetts: Of all you have done, what do you consider your best work, and why? Elkana: Probably the song cycle Arabic Lessons or the clarinet concerto Tru'a, the String Quartet No. 2, Eight Flowers for piano, Homage to Ligeti for chamber orchestra and the recent Casino Umbro. It is probably because of the feedback that I got for these works... Tibbetts: What is your 'typical day' like? Elkana: ||: Wake up -- walk in the park -- compose/play/tasks/errands -- lunch -- more of compose/play/tasks/errands -- nap! -- yoga (I wish...) -- dinner -- more of compose/play/tasks/errands or socializing/entertainment/culture/etc -- sleep :|| Tibbetts: Do you have any words of wisdom to offer to aspiring composers and musicians? Elkana: Be true to yourself! Experiment! Do not be afraid but if you are--face your fears! Know what you are doing or ask questions and research until you do!
