Daniel Remar is a video game developer. For information about his work, visit www.remar.se/daniel.

Tibbetts: How long have you been developing games, and what made you decide to become a game developer?

Remar: I've been making games since '94, I've always been fascinated with them (and constantly bullied for it). I grew up with PCs and several consoles. I didn't get serious about game making until 2004 though.

Tibbetts: Which software do you prefer?

Remar: I mainly work in Game Maker 5 in my spare time. I also use Photoshop 5 and GoldWave.

Tibbetts: What inspires you?

Remar: Everything, but mostly older games--or memories of games as I knew them back then.

Tibbetts: Of all you have done, what do you consider your best work, and why?

Remar: Hero Core, due to being better designed and more cohesive than Iji. It may not be as big or content-rich, but it has no glaring weak points like graphics or writing. I'm happy with how it turned out.

Tibbetts: Do you have any words of wisdom to offer to aspiring game developers and programmers?

Remar: It takes time, practice, patience, and the willingness to accept critiscism to create something really good, regardless of discipline. If you're content with mediocrity you don't need any of those though, and there's nothing wrong with that; in fact, striving only for perfection can be bad in itself (it's certainly stressful at times). We don't have to be perfect at stuff, just good enough to feel satisfied. I know I'll never top a game like Super Metroid, and I won't be trying either. :p

Make what you love. Also, work on many projects; don't put everything into just one game that might fail after years of development.
