For information about his work, visit www.jamesdunlopmusic.com. Tibbetts: How long have you composed, and what made you decide to become a composer? Dunlop: I've been composing since 2009 but have only been writing seriously since 2011. I wanted to be a composer because I play and perform so much great music on a day to day basis; I am a professional musician during the day so I get to play vast amounts of works in different styles and periods, and I say to myself "why can't I be the person who wrote this. It's amazing!". Tibbetts: What inspires you? Dunlop: I guess it has to be what I put above. I perform so many works: concertos, symphonies, movie themes, etc. These inspire me to write music as I want to be as good as the composers who write what I'm playing! Tibbetts: Of all you have done, what do you consider your best work, and why? Dunlop: I don't have a best work, purely because my latest piece always becomes my favourite until I write something new. It's always been like that. Tibbetts: What is your 'typical day' like? Dunlop: I get up, go into work and rehearse for the concert I've got coming up. I'm a full time musician and I get the privilege to perform in amazing venues and concerts halls all around the UK and the world. I was in fact rehearsing some music a few days ago for the Royal Albert Hall which is coming up. When I'm not performing, I'm composing! Tibbetts: Do you have any words of wisdom to offer aspiring composers and musicians? Dunlop: Study. Practice. Network. Absorb as much as you can and then apply it. Don't be afraid to try new things as it will ultimately make you more versatile. Most of all enjoy it!
