I wanted to compose in a way that made the music seemed lapidary, as if it were cut like a gem. I wanted each line to be very clear and crisp. This is often a good aspirational goal for me, but especially in this piece I tried not to write any extra notes. I also had fun with it. This piece is light, playful, and rather simple. It was premiered by David Orr, a composer who has written some excellent music for films and video games. As you'll see in this video he's also a skilled pianist.
