Waltz Love Story was a piece I wrote for my junior recital at the University of New Hampshire. I wanted to write something for two pianos because there were two pianos in the recital hall. I also wanted to collaborate with the person I was performing with that day. The junior recital was structured in such a way that you would split your performance time with another student, basically as two half recitals. I split mine with a promising young pianist named Michelle Enos, who performed this with me as the finale to the show. (Michelle still plays the piano, and she now teaches in the Philadelphia area.) In this piece, I attempted to capture the emotions of a story without telling the details. I think the title sort of said it all; even though the movements are named ambiguously, I always felt the arc of the "love story" was pretty clear. Basically, I wanted to show people falling in love (movements one and two), getting mad (movement three), saying sorry (four), and then having fun (five). I'm grateful to Michelle for working with me on this recital. I'm happy to have worked with her and performed this piece. The recordings above are from the recital. They're live, and they contain a few errors, but they're represent the piece with reasonable accuracy. Sheet music for this piece is available to subscribers.
