Speed Of Light

Download mp3

Some scientific ideas are so weird, so completely counter to our deepest intuitions, that we literally cannot imagine them. We cannot picture what the world would look like if these descriptions were accurate. And yet the best science we have tells that yes, not only could the world be this way, but we know for a fact that this is actually how things behave under extreme conditions. Even though you can't imagine it, it's true.

"Speed of Light", for SATB choir and piano, draws attention to three strange truths: first, no objects can travel faster than light because they would become infinitely, impossibly massive; second, the universe itself is expanding faster and faster, scattering everything apart at an infinitely increasing rate; and third, this means that someday the light from distant objects won't be able to reach us anymore, and our great-great-great-great-etc.-grandchildren will never see the distant stars in our sky today.

Remarks and writings by Stephen Hawking and Neil DeGrasse Tyson inspired this piece.
