To Fly A Kite was filmed before I went off to college in 2007. I made it myself with a camera and tripod. It's a bit of a time capsule.
I was in the habit of shooting and then only later finding a method in the madness. I would edit (and compose music) so it would seem as though I was working with a purpose, but there never was a purpose when I began. I just filmed what seemed appealing and meaningful. Even though it didn't always produce good results, I enjoyed doing that.
The day I shot this, I wasn't really expecting to be able to fly the kite very much. It was a nice day but not especially windy. I just thought it would be an interesting experiment to film myself attempting to fly a kite. To my surprise, it caught beautifully and went high.
Maybe this has something to do with how I was feeling during that transitional time--or maybe not--but when I saw the footage it struck me as showing someone overcoming some paralysis or inner obstacle. I'm not sure what it means but it meant a lot to me then.
